A timely reminder (8:45pm Tuesday evening in fact) on the big difference between the North Island and South Island at sunset.

As we head into summer, and the summer solstice a month away, the days will continue to get longer – especially in the South Island. This is due to the shape of the earth and the angle the earth faces the sun in summer.

The further you get from the equator the longer the daylight hours get – until you reach 24/7 daylight in Antarctica. Of course, the opposite occurs in our winter.

Sunset in Gisborne was at 8:06pm.

Interestingly, at this time of year, both Gisborne in the north and Dunedin in the south both have sunrise around the same time.
